This piece was written on November 9th, 2005 for my theology course. This will be my last post of written pieces from that course. Enjoy!
“‘Come, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ May we now follow Christ as Lord of our lives, obediently doing His will, and behaving as He would lead us to behave.”‘ Writer, Steve Smartt, does a wonderful job of stating the task of following Jesus. Following Him is an attempt to live your life like He would want you to. However, following Jesus means other things to me as well; such as being willing to give up everything to show my faith that God knows what is best for me.
The call to follow Jesus is one that we all have to listen for in our lives. Jesus calls each of us to do different things with our talents, and we only need to listen attentively to hear Him. For me personally, I am still trying to hear what that call is. I have not decided my major and I am still trying to figure out what I would most enjoy doing for a living, and how that could positively affect the world. I hope that once I do know what my calling is, I will be certain about it and able to live a life with no regrets. (I ended up majoring in Communication Studies!)
I also believe the call to follow Jesus has a lot to do with faith. In order to follow Him, you need to put all of your trust in Him. The fishermen did this when he came and asked them to leave everything behind and follow Him. Those men chose to trust Jesus blindly, and put their lives in His hands. They did not know where He was taking them or what they would be doing, but chose to simply have faith in spite of everything.
